Gutter Guards

Gutter Guard Installation in PA, MD & DE

Gutter guards are covers fitted over your gutters that keep leaves and debris out while letting rainwater through, so your gutters don’t clog, overflow, or need constant cleaning. For most homes with nearby trees, quality micro-mesh guards are worth it — they cut cleaning to a minimum and prevent the water damage that clogged gutters cause. TC Backer Construction installs two professional gutter guard systems — a ribbed aluminum insert and a stainless-steel micro-mesh — across Pennsylvania, northern Maryland, and Delaware, with free written estimates and financing.

How they work

Types of gutter guards — and why mesh wins

All gutter guards do the same job: block debris while letting water in. They differ in how well they do it and how long they last. Here’s how the main types compare.

Best

Micro-mesh

A fine stainless-steel mesh over an aluminum frame. Blocks even small debris — pine needles, shingle grit, seeds — while letting water through. Among the most effective, longest-lasting options — and the type used in our Xtreme system.

Perforated / screen

Punched metal or plastic screens. Cheaper, but larger openings let smaller debris through, so they still clog over time and often need removal to clean.

Reverse-curve / surface tension

Solid covers that route water over a curved lip. Can work, but are bulkier, more visible from the ground, and prone to overshooting in heavy rain.

Foam & brush inserts

Drop-in foam blocks or bristle inserts. Inexpensive and DIY-friendly, but short-lived — they trap debris on top and degrade quickly.

TC Backer installs two professional guard systems — the GutterRx ribbed aluminum insert and the Xtreme stainless micro-mesh — chosen for long-term protection. See our full gutter services for new seamless gutters and repairs.

Do you need them?

Should you get gutter guards?

Guards aren’t mandatory for every home, but they pay off fastest in these situations. If two or more apply to you, guards are very likely worth it:

You have trees near the roof

Overhanging branches drop leaves, seeds, and needles straight into your gutters — the number-one cause of clogs.

You clean gutters often (or pay someone)

If you’re up a ladder twice a year or paying for cleanings, guards quickly offset that recurring time and cost.

Your roof is steep or multi-story

Cleaning is dangerous and expensive on tall or steep roofs. Guards minimize how often anyone has to get up there.

You get heavy rain or pine needles

High rainfall and fine debris overwhelm bare gutters fast. Micro-mesh handles volume while keeping fine debris out.

You’ve had overflow or ice dams

If water already sheets over the edge or ice backs up in winter, clogging is part of the problem guards help solve.

You want to protect your foundation

Guards keep gutters flowing so water is carried away from the house instead of pooling at the foundation.

What we install

The two gutter guard systems we offer

We install two proven systems — one ribbed aluminum, one stainless micro-mesh — and recommend the right one for your roof, tree cover, and rainfall.

Stainless-steel micro-mesh gutter guard keeping debris out while draining rainwater, installed by TC Backer Construction
Surgical-grade stainless micro-mesh keeps fine debris out while letting rainwater through.

GutterRx™

An American-made aluminum insert built from 98% recycled aluminum, with a patented ribbed design that promotes airflow to help clear debris. It fits both new and existing gutters, never interferes with roof shingles, and is virtually invisible from the ground. Available in white and dark bronze, in regular and step-up profiles, and backed by a lifetime warranty.

Xtreme Gutter Guards (by Leaf Solution)

A surgical-grade stainless steel micro-mesh system with patented hemmed construction that locks the mesh to the aluminum body so it won’t sag or separate. Handles up to 60 gallons of water per minute, blocks leaves, pine needles, pollen tassels, shingle grit, and twigs, and fits 5", 6", and 7" gutters in black and mill finishes. Backed by a Lifetime No-Clog Warranty.

Why it matters

What gutter guards protect you from

Open gutter without guards clogged with leaves and debris on a Pennsylvania home — the problem TC Backer Construction gutter guards prevent
A clogged, unguarded gutter — the recurring problem guards are designed to end.

Constant cleaning. Guards keep debris out, so you’re off the ladder and out of recurring cleaning bills.

Clogs & overflow. Clear gutters carry water away instead of spilling over the edge onto siding and soil.

Fascia & soffit rot. Stopping overflow keeps the wood behind your gutters dry and sound.

Foundation & basement water. Flowing gutters move water away from the house, protecting the foundation.

Ice dams. In PA and DE winters, debris-free gutters drain properly and reduce ice backup at the roof edge.

Pests & nesting. Standing debris in open gutters invites insects and rodents; mesh removes the habitat.

Common questions

Gutter guard FAQs

Are gutter guards really worth it?

For most homes with nearby trees, yes. Quality micro-mesh guards keep leaves and debris out so gutters don’t clog and overflow, which means far less cleaning and a much lower risk of the water damage that clogged gutters cause. The fewer trees and the lower your roof, the less the payoff — which is why we give an honest recommendation for your specific home.

Do micro-mesh gutter guards work in heavy rain?

Yes. Quality micro-mesh systems are designed to handle high water volume — the Xtreme system we install handles up to 60 gallons of water per minute — while still blocking fine debris. Cheaper screen or reverse-curve guards are more likely to overshoot or let debris through in heavy rain.

Can gutter guards be added to my existing gutters?

In many cases, yes — if your existing gutters are in good condition and properly pitched. During a free inspection we check whether your current gutters are a good candidate for guards or whether replacing them first makes more sense.

What’s the difference between micro-mesh and cheap screen guards?

Screen guards have larger openings, so smaller debris like pine needles and shingle grit still gets through and they clog over time. Micro-mesh uses a fine stainless-steel mesh that blocks that fine debris while letting water through, and is built to last far longer. It’s the difference between reducing cleaning and largely eliminating it.

Do gutter guards prevent ice dams?

They help, but they aren’t a standalone ice-dam cure. Debris-free gutters drain properly and reduce ice backup at the roof edge. Ice dams also depend on attic insulation and ventilation, so we’ll tell you honestly what guards will and won’t solve for your home.

Do gutters with guards still need cleaning?

Far less often. Micro-mesh keeps debris out of the gutter itself, so instead of clearing packed leaves from inside, occasional maintenance is mostly brushing debris off the top of the mesh. Many homeowners go from twice-a-year cleanings to rarely needing service.

What gutter guard brands do you install?

We install two professional systems. GutterRx™ is an American-made aluminum insert with a patented ribbed design, available in white and dark bronze. Xtreme Gutter Guards by Leaf Solution is a surgical-grade stainless-steel micro-mesh with patented hemmed construction that fits 5", 6", and 7" gutters. We recommend the right one based on your roof, tree cover, and rainfall.
